Six Decades of Tradition on Historic Greenville Land

The Land

The Edwards Family Legacy

Long before the first tee shot was ever struck, the land that is now home to Carolina Golf at Botany Woods belonged to the Edwards family, a prominent local family with deep roots in Greenville County. Their legacy remains evident today in Edwards Road, which borders the course, and in the nearby Edwards Family Cemetery located near Edwards Road Baptist Church.

The Vision

1963 - A Masterful Design

Developer John Taylor envisioned a residential community that offered not just beautiful homes, but also a sense of community and recreation. He set aside 41 acres of rolling terrain for a golf course and commissioned renowned architect George W. Cobb—designer of the iconic Par-3 Course at Augusta National Golf Club—to bring his vision to life. Cobb, a Greenville resident, created our challenging and scenic 9-hole, par-3 course.

Birth of a Club

1965 - Present

On November 9, 1965, residents of the Botany Woods neighborhood formally established the "Botany Woods Country Club" with the purpose of promoting social activities and furthering "the royal and ancient game of golf." In 1971, the club became "Carolina Golf and Tennis Club" with the addition of tennis facilities, later evolving to its current name—Carolina Golf at Botany Woods—honoring both its location and its storied heritage.

Botany Woods today
"To maintain a clubhouse and grounds for the benefit of its members, to promote social activities and to further athletic exercises and sports, particularly the royal and ancient game of golf."
